How to Iron a Graduation Sash or Stole Without Burning It

Whether it displays your university colors, a field of study, or a cultural heritage design, it is usually made from delicate, highly heat-sensitive materials like satin, silk, or polyester blends.

Because these fabrics melt, scorch, or develop an permanent artificial sheen under high heat, you cannot iron them like a standard cotton shirt. Here is the safest way to remove creases and wrinkles from your graduation sash without damaging the fabric or embroidery.

Graduation Sash/Stole Safe Ironing Method: Step-by-Step

To eliminate wrinkles from a sash safely, you must use indirect heat and minimal moisture. Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1: Clean and Prepare Your Ironing Surface

Ensure your ironing board is clean and completely dry. Any residual moisture or dirt on the board can stain delicate satin fabrics under heat. Turn your iron to its lowest heat setting, typically labeled as "Silk" or "Synthetics." Turn off the steam feature completely; sputtering iron water can leave permanent water spots on satin.

Step 2: Lay the Sash Face Down

Place your graduation sash face down on the ironing board. If your sash features custom embroidery, iron-on lettering, or printed text, ironing from the backside prevents the heat from melting, peeling, or cracking the design elements.
